I installed MKS Gen L V2.1 with TMC 2209 drivers to my Creality Ender-3 printer and updated the software to marlin 2, the stepper motors are getting extremely hot. What should i due to resolve this problem. The following Code is from the configuration_adv.h file showing the currents.

    #if AXIS_IS_TMC(X)
    #define X_CURRENT 800 // (mA) RMS current. Multiply by 1.414 for peak current.
    #define X_CURRENT_HOME X_CURRENT // (mA) RMS current for sensorless homing
    #define X_MICROSTEPS     32    // 0..256
    #define X_RSENSE          0.11
    #define X_CHAIN_POS      -1    // <=0 : Not chained. 1 : MCU MOSI connected. 2 : Next in chain, ...
  #endif

  #if AXIS_IS_TMC(X2)
    #define X2_CURRENT      800
    #define X2_CURRENT_HOME X2_CURRENT

    #define X2_RSENSE         0.11

  #if AXIS_IS_TMC(Z4)

Thanks.

    $\begingroup$ I'm not familiar with TMC 2209s but I've read that Trynamic's steppers run hot normally. $\endgroup$

I notice that in "configuration_adv.h" for the BIGTREETECH-SKR-mini-E3, which uses TMC2209 drivers, the similar section has:

#if HAS_TRINAMIC_CONFIG

  #define HOLD_MULTIPLIER 0.5 // Scales down the holding current from run current
  #define INTERPOLATE       true  // Interpolate X/Y/Z_MICROSTEPS to 256

  #if AXIS_IS_TMC(X)
    #define X_CURRENT 580 // (mA) RMS current. Multiply by 1.414 for peak current.
    #define X_CURRENT_HOME (X_CURRENT/2) // (mA) RMS current for sensorless homing
    #define X_MICROSTEPS     16    // 0..256

In the reddit thread Stepper driver current settings?, user brewc found that the stepper motors drivers supplied with the Ender 3 specify peak (maximum) current whereas the TMC drivers specify RMS current.

So, you probably want to change the current settings to those in the above .h file.

Of course, in the spirit of changing almost everything on an Ender 3, you could also swap for stepper motors with a higher current specification and/or add heatsinks to the motors.

  • $\begingroup$ Thank you so much for the comment. Unfortunately, I tried what you have stated in your answer but nothing changed the motors are very hot. Do you have another suggestion? $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @Rayan From a quick google, I think a relevant question is: are the "jumper caps" installed so that the TMC2209 drivers are using SPI control? $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 10, 2021 at 16:16
  • $\begingroup$ I'm so sorry but I do not know what is the meaning of SPI control?. I'm relatively new regarding 3D printers. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @Rayan SPI is a way for parts of a system to communicate. As no-one with experience of that board with those drivers is replying here, I'll point you to another reddit post: How to setup tmc 2209 uart on mks genl v2.1? $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 10, 2021 at 17:13
  • $\begingroup$ I have solved the x, y, and z axes problem by putting the UART jumper. but I couldnt solve the dual-axis problem, when putting the UART jumper the noise increase and the temperature doesn't dissipate and they become out of phase! $\endgroup$
