I'm planning to install new stepper drivers into my 3D printer. The model is an older Qidi Tech 1 with a proprietary board a variation of the Sailfish firmware. I have no ability to connect any UART pins or make changes to the firmware without replacing the entire board.

I've found that the TMC2209 drivers (among others) are a close drop-in replacement for the stock A4988. One of the steps to configure the new driver is to adjust the output voltage, which can be dome manually with the onboard trim pot.

If the calculated output voltage is based on the load (the steppers themselves) then can I sidestep all of the extra work to derive this value and match the existing voltage? If I can already measure the output voltage of the old drivers then it seems like it would be easier to just match that on the new ones.
