How do stepstick protectors (https://www.watterott.com/en/SilentStepStick-ProtectorStepStick Protectors) work and what exactly do they protect?

If I use them with pololuPololu style stepper drivers, can I unplug for example the motor while the driver is powered without damaging the driver?
